As already said, the Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament to be held in Asia. The Durand Cup 2023 is the 132nd version of it. It is collectively hosted by Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) and All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Durand Cup is named after its founder Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. He was a foreign secretary in British India. This football match began as a football tournament among different departments and Army Regiment in the British Time.
The 1st Durand Cup was held in 1888 in Shimla. Mohun Bagan AC and East bengal Club have won 16 times each and the highest victory. Last Year i.e Bengaluru F.C was the holder of Durand Cup 2022.
DURAND CUP 2023 FORMATS
Durand Cup 2023 will be held from 3rd August to 3rd September. There will be 43 matches played between 24 teams divided into 6 groups. So, each group will consist of 4 teams.
The group topper from each group will directly qualify for quarter finals. So, 6 teams will go to the quarter finals. Then a single points table will created for the rest 2nd best team of each group . The top 2 teams out of 6 teams will also proceed to quarter finals.
There will be 4 quarter finals played between 8 teams. 4 teams will reach semifinals and then after that there will be final match. The below diagram will clear your doubt.
