Assam has an extensive river structure. The Brahmaputra is the most important river of Assam. Bridges in Assam over the Brahmapautra and its tributaries are the lifeline to the people of Assam.

There are major 6 bridges in Assam  over the river the Brahmaputra as on 2022. 6 new bridges in Assam are under construction. 3 new bridges in Assam are proposed and awaiting for approval from Minster of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH).

There are 6  bridges in Assam over the Brahmaputra and its tributaries as of 2022. These include under construction bridges and they are not yet opened to the public. I will list all the 8 bridges below.

BOGIBEEL BRIDGE

Bridges in Assam bogibeel bridge

It is a road cum rail bridge that connects Dhemaji district of Assam to Dibrugarh district of Assam. Bogibeel bridge is located just 17 km from Dibrugarh town. The Cost of constructing this bridge was nearly ₹5920 crores.

Bogibell  bridge is a road cum railway bridge. It has 3 lane roadway on and double line broad gauge railway. Bogibeel is the first bridge in India to be made of full steel concrete composite grinders.

LOCATION OF BOGIBEEL BRIDGE

Bogibeel Bridge connects Dhemaji district and Dibrugarh district of Assam. It is just 20km away from Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

  • This bridge can withstand earthquakes of magnitude upto 7 on the Richter scale.
  • Bogibill bridge is the 5th longest bridge in India.

BHUPEN HAZARIKA SETU (DHOLA SADIYA BRIDGE)

As of now Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola Sadiya Bridge) is the longest bridge in India spanning 9.15 km. It is built above Lohit river connecting Dhola and Sadiya village of Tinsukia district of Assam.

The bridge has only facilities for road transport. It is a 3 lane bridge that can whitsand 60 tons of weight.

KOLIA BHOMORA SETU

Bridges in Assam Kolia Bhomora Setu

Kolia Bhomara Setu is one of the oldest bridge in Assam over river Brahmaputra. It connects Tezpur with Kaliabor. This river bridge of Assam has a length of 3 KM and the material used is pre-stressed concrete.

Kolia Bhomara Setu is named after Ahom General Kolia Bhomara Phukan. During his time he made plans to build a bridge in this location and also started to collect rocks. But due to his death his project was stopped.

SARAIGHAT BRIDGE (OLD)

Saraighat is the oldest bridge of Assam over river Brahmaputra. It is a rail-cum-road bridge with a length of 1.492 KM. This bridge was opened for the public in 1963.

Naranarayan Setu is the 3rd  longest bridge in Assam and the 3rd bridge to be built over Brahmaputra in Assam.

The bridge connects Jogighopa of Bongaigaon district and Pancharatna of Goalpara district. The name of the bridge is after the 16th century Koch king.

New Saraighat Bridge is built parallel to the old Saraighat Bridge. It is also  known as the 2nd SaraighatSaraighat bridge.

It is 3 lane road bridge unlike the old saraighat bridge. The old saraighat bridge is road-cum-rail bridge.
